Are uPVC sash windows as good as I’ve heard?
uPVC is a strong and resilient material that, historically, was not known for its standout aesthetics. Things have moved on in recent years. uPVC can now mirror the handsome look of a classic looking timber sash window. So much so, it could be hard to tell it apart from a genuine wooden one (minus the time-consuming maintenance).
It’s also important to point out how much cheaper they are than traditional wooden sash windows. From a cost-efficiency point of view, they’re a high-quality option that’s hard to beat. Easy to clean and maintain, they won’t require continuous painting to retain their fresh appearance either.
How should I measure my sash window?
Width: measure laterally from one side to the other, while remaining within the box frame. Don’t take into account the width of the box within which the window is situated.
Height: Take into account both of the sashes when measuring from top to bottom. As before, measure within the box frame, to ensure that your numbers are accurate.
Box frame height: start at the top of the window frame and measure down toward the windowsill.
Box frame width: this includes the whole frame of the window.
Should I get uPVC or aluminium windows?
uPVC sash windows have an intrinsically insulative quality, so they will keep your home energy efficient. It is also a durable material that needs virtually no upkeep (a simple wipe down with a damp cloth is all that’s required).
Although similarly insulative, aluminium is costlier than uPVC. That said, they are a lot stronger and can be constructed using thinner frames that are more visually appealing. This has the added effect of creating a larger glazed area, which means more light and better views of the outdoors.
Both aluminium and uPVC windows come with their own unique set of benefits. Why not ask for advice by contacting us.
Can I get double glazed sash windows?
This style no longer comes as single glazed. You can request double or triple glazing to keep your property well insulated.
If your home improvement budget is limited, remember that uPVC sash windows are cheaper than most other styles of double glazing. You can also tailor the design of your windows to replicate the characterful look of wood grain – but without having to stump up the extra cash to enjoy such superb aesthetics.
How exactly do sash windows work?
They consist of two panels. One or both of these will have the capacity to move vertically in either direction. If it is a single-hung window, just one of these panels will be operational. Want more air inside your home? Then you should really be aiming for a double-hung sash window which will include two moving panels.
When a sash window is opened, the glass in the panel stays in the same position, as opposed to falling back into the frame. The reason for this is that it works using a pulley system. One of the windows is situated at the end of the cord. The other end includes a counterweight. This prevents the window from shutting when the sash is released.
How can I tell which part of the window is a sash?
It’s the part of the window that sits within the frame and which retains the glazed panes so that they’re held together. The type of window you’ve chosen will influence the sash. If you decide upon a double-hung design with two sashes, both will move. If you elect to have a single-hung version, just the one sash will be operational.
It’s vital that a sash window is professionally fitted and maintained throughout its lifecycle. Else, it will not retain its superb aesthetics and will let in unwanted water and draughts. This will cause damage to the frame and compromise its insulating properties. Take a look at our repairs and maintenance page for more information.
