Durable and aesthetically pleasing

French windows are often used in the higher areas of a property, so as to give access to more pleasing views. They are sometimes used at ground-floor level as an escape route, in cases where an existing opening is too small to comply with fire regulations.

How can I tell French windows and French doors apart?

The mechanism used in both cases is identical. The size and method of operation are, however, different in both cases. The design comprises twin glass panels that open from the middle out – with no intervening pillar in the centre. When your doors or windows are opened fully, you’ll have a clear vista of the outdoors.

You’ll tend to find that French doors are used as patio doors to introduce a home to the outside. Windows made in this style are smaller and can be installed at any level of a property. They provide remarkable ventilation (and did we mention the incredible views?)

Why are French windows called French windows?

This story is the same for both French windows and doors. In the Renaissance during the 17th century, new ideas in art and architecture were developing, with light as a central theme. To get more light in their homes, they started to use more glass in their windows. This trend came over to France, where they made large windows that could either be used in the home as doors or as a way to get out onto their balconies on summer days. This meant they could light their homes more effectively, and the design became popularised across Western Europe in a few decades.

Are French windows secure enough to protect my home?

They are no more or less secure than any other style of double glazing. It all comes down to the hardware, mechanisms, glazing, and materials used at the manufacturing and fabrication stages.

We value security as much as you do, which is why our products meet the precise criteria of Secured By Design – a police-led initiative designed to reduce the frequency of burglaries throughout the UK.

Our French windows showcase three-point locking systems, shoot-bolts, extra strong hinges, and thermally-strengthened glass, making it almost impossible for intruders to gain access to your home.

What are the main benefits of French windows?

One of the key – and most recognised benefits of this style is its ability to create wide panoramas of the outside. If you live in a picturesque area, you will probably want to make the most of the beauty on your doorstep – which this style of window will allow you to do.

Apart from creating outstanding views, French windows excel at inviting in cooling breezes that will keep your home feeling fresh, while also reducing the possibility of damp-related problems.

Of course, you’ll also be able to enjoy access to more light, making your rooms feel brighter and creating a better sense of space.

How did French windows get their name?

It’s the same narrative for both French windows and doors. During the Renaissance, new concepts and ideas were sweeping across Europe. This affected architecture too, especially in relation to how light could be used to better effect in homes. This led to the advent of more glass, an idea that found its way to France. Larger windows capable of doubling up as doors became the norm. The concept remained popular and spread to other countries.

Do French windows swing in or out?

French windows only ever open outwards. This is beneficial, as your internal areas are not infringed upon by your frames. Friction hinges are included which can open up to 60° – or you can opt for an egress window with a 90° opening arc (it can also function as a valid fire escape route). These hinges can easily be adjusted and don’t move in the wind.

Can French windows double-up as a fire escape?

FENSA is a scheme authorised by the UK government. It requires that rooms on upper floors must have fire escape windows, provided they’re not fitted at a height greater than 4.5 metres. A fire escape window has to be capable of creating a clear space that’s 0.3 metres squared. French windows, if made to the correct size specification, fulfil these criteria and can, therefore, be considered valid by FENSA.
